Most of those 176 parties would be regional, local outfits. So, if you are a voter in a particular place, your choices would be a lot narrower -- about 4 or 5, and in some cases, as few as just two.

And yes, things are getting better in Indian elections. For a democracy that is only about 50 years old, that is creditable, especially since the other "great" democracy in the world, the US, is more comfortable supporting dictatorships like those in Pakistan than democracies like India.
