From Jerusalem Post today. Interesting interpretation of the rabbi on the collective guilt of a society that is enslaving another.

"Eventually, he can take no more and is forced to free them. He even asks them for a blessing (Exodus 12:32), which Sarna calls "the ultimate humbling of the despot." But even after all that, he regrets his decision to free the people of Israel and sets out to regain his "property."

One may ask if all of this punishment, which affected not only Pharaoh but all Egyptians, was justified. The answer is that a society is responsible for its actions. The enslavement of an entire people was not accomplished by some small elite. It was accepted by and benefited all of Egypt.

We need not rejoice in the plagues and the suffering they caused. Indeed, at the Seder we diminish our cup of wine, the symbol of joy, when we mention them. But we are also aware that once the Egyptians had taken the initial step of enslaving the Israelites, they had committed an evil that would bring consequences with it, consequences that would prove the impotence of their gods and the greatness of the Lord, the source of human freedom.
