Well Ron, [as Dr J begins answers], it did start from vapor-ware and DW-40 came into it.
But there was evolution, as with EV-DO.
When L M Ericsson and the GSM Nazis were denigrating CDMA, via Bill "Dead Horse" Frezza [who I shall ritually flog later] and others, as being the "CDMA Mafia" with hopeless technology, L M Ericsson [with Lars Ramqvist as king] were asserting that they had invented CDMA back in the 1980s, or maybe it was the 1890s.
The GSM Guild was doing all they could to stymie CDMA. They lied, stole, [remember the Ericsson guys swiping the Q phone housing or something], exaggerated, misled and generally emitted a huge amount of slime, leading to the hagfish description.
You know the story of the king not wearing any clothes, with the swindling tailors telling him he had a beautiful raiment of gold and silver thread. Well, King Ericsson was obviously not wearing any clothes in regard to CDMA and so it was found in court in 1999 [or on the court-house steps which is much the same]. They were wearing vapour-wear. Hence VW. All the crowd was saying what a beautiful cloak King Ericy was wearing made of W-CDMA silver and gold thread, but they had not in fact invented CDMA and had only vapour-ware intended to prolong the life of GSM and hold off QUALCOMM's CDMA with promises, promises, promises, lies and dishonesty.
Being GSM Nazis, who are of course great on propaganda, [google Goebels], they also invented the Volkswagen, hence also VW to carry them around in their vapour-wear [a pun on vapour-ware, or vapor-ware for Americans].
I forget who now, but somebody suggested DW-40 as something slippery for everything and so the 40 was added. Maybe there was also an aspect of SAE 40 [viscosity] as in a standards association declaration [I forget that aspect and SI search is not much good these days].
It evolved over many discussions but that's the gist of it.
VW-40 = Vapour-wear for naked King Ericsson and the GSM Nazis.
I recall it was considered offensive to use the term "Nazis" in relation to the GSM Guild, though that was purely in response to the term used by Bill Frezza, namely CDMA "Mafia", Mafia also being a gang of criminal thugs. So take that Bill Frezza!! And that!!! And that!!!! He was wrong in all the respects that mattered, which isn't surprising since he was being paid 3 days a month as a consultant to King Ericy, emperor of the hagfish.
Imagine the dismay when a whole swarm of QUALCOMM people found themselves being sold down the river to said L M Ericsson who took over the Design Centre, QUALCOMM's HQ, and the infrastructure division, in an attempt to establish themselves in CDMA as invented by QUALCOMM and belatedly admitted.
Yet EricL goes on and on about Dr J's preliminary estimates about capacity not being met for several years, timing on MSMs being out by months, judgment on prospects for EDGE being misguided, and estimates for W-CDMA ASIC market share being out. Monster outright lies and dissembling and misleading were going on in the GSM Guild and we are supposed to be worried about months here or there and undue criticism of Dr J and QUALCOMM by various jealous losers, and greedy Koreans [and others], whining like a fleet of 747s about QUALCOMM's derisory royalties while they bank umpty $billion and gain pre-eminence in the world's wirelss technology.
Anyway, I'm happy to let bygones be bygones, so I don't want to speak harshly of those mostly really genuine good guys in L M Ericsson, Nokia etc other than to say "Die Evil Scum!!" [To quote Tero Kuittinen in regard to Globalstar]
