Then why do they officially go by the double name Red Cross Red Crescent society? ifrc.org

Arun,
The Red Crescent Society exists because in some Islamic
countries it is illegal to proselytize and they take the same
paranoid view of the Red Cross as a christian symbol as you are
taking. In most places, regardless of the religious origin,
the red cross is not a religious symbol. If India becaomes
a Hindu republic that prosecutes Christian symbols, I am sure
IFRC will be happy to call any similar affiliated organization
a Red Trident Society and work with them just as it has no issue
with a Red Crescent Society in Islam-only cross-o-phobic countries.

You are defending the sensibilities of an unban educated
India. But I have no problems believing the story where
an upper caste snooty family will have problems sleeping to
a Dalit family. That India too exists. Even today.

If you want to knock Yiwu off the high moral ground, you may
want to ask her about why the Dalai Lama picture or Falun Gong membership or Independent Taiwan sign will get you arrested in China. Not sure, but I will not be surprised if being a Hare Krishna in China will also get you in trouble fast as they officially decide what is a religion(allowed) and what is a cult (not allowed).

Every society has some bigotry going on, there is no need to be in denial and so defensive. Also, not all non-local-religion charities are out there to convert people. Religion provides people motivation to indulge in serving others (which most of us caught in the making money rat race cannot always do).

If people are bribed to convert in India, I think it is great capitalist common sense for the poor people. I am pretty sure they will convert again to the next higher bidding religion. More power and money to them. THere was a time I switched long distance companies every few months and made money while doing that. :-)
