In one of the highest-profile victories to date for broadband over powerlines (BPL) in the United States, the Trump organization has begun installing the technology in all of the Trump properties in New York City.

The Trump folks have turned to Telkonet, which specializes in powerline broadband for multi-tenant buildings and commercial properties, for the necessary gear. Trump’s current ISP, Microwave Satellite Technologies (MST), is handling the installation, and it will provide its branded NuVision service for broadband and VoIP. Powerline technology, as anyone following the business knows, isn’t ready yet for a full triple play because it doesn’t support enough bandwidth for video. That’s expected to be rectified within the year, as new higher-speed powerline technology now in tests dribbles out into the market.

The Trump properties already come wired with Cat 5 cabling but the decision to convert to powerline was made so that “residents are no longer confined to accessing their broadband connection at a single location” where the Cat 5 terminates in the apartment, says MST President and Founder Frank Matarazzo. With BPL, users simply plug in an adapter to any electrical outlet.

The first Trump property that will get powerline broadband is 140 Riverside Boulevard at Trump Place, a 30-story, 356-unit apartment building. Installation will begin immediately. That building will be followed by installations at the remaining six Trump Place buildings, for a total of 2,121 units. Once Trump Place is wired, BPL will be installed at Trump World Tower and the Trump International Hotel and Tower. In addition, BPL also will go into eight new Trump Place buildings scheduled to be built during the next four years, for a grand total of 7,500 units.
