Mary, brian h was right and Jay wrong in his nihilistic apolitical anomie.
Brian h's mother was right too.
We are all ruled by somebody and they are not us, nor representative of us. Taiwanese being ruled by Japanese is not necessarily bad. For the most part in human history, cruel repression has been carried out by those "nearest and dearest to us". Foreigners are not especially more vicious, provided their rules are complied with and tribute paid by the enslaved, which is no different from what our nearest and dearest kin rulers demand.
I am currently ruled by Helen of Helengrad and her coven of kleptocratic suffocatocracy enthusiasts. I am not at all sure I wouldn't prefer to be ruled directly by Japan as a prefecture. I doubt they'd be any more insistent that we learn Japanese than that Helengrad requires us to learn Maori and pay tribute to Maoris in a reprise of apartheid [which is richly ironic given New Zealand's and Helen's long antipathy to South Africa's version].
The redeeming virtue of being ruled on a democratic basis by the local thuggery is that when or if sufficient of the locals decide that it's not that much fun, we can turf the rogues out. But Japan is a democracy too, so we could vote the rulers out if we disliked what they were doing.
Hu Jintao is in the process of taking over New Zealand, so I expect most likely is that we'll be ruled by Beijing and they are NOT messing around with taking polls, because as Yiwu the Mad says, Chinese are all mindless clones, who are superior to "Westerners" and she KNOWS what they all think. Brian h isn't Chinese because he isn't thinking right.
You say leave it to the family to sort out. I'm part of that family. So it's my business too. You racists would deny that. You seem to have a nose length fixation, as though the visual aspect of people is more than superficially a definition of them. More important than nose length is community of interest.
<my guess is that you would not mind it that much if GWB "liberated" the Chinese from rulers who were not democratically elected. >
You are quite right in that I'm quite happy for King George II to extend his empire to include the protection of Taiwan from attack by Hu Jintao's and Vladimir Putin's gang. But I would not extend that to an invasion of China and regime change.
Democracy as currently constituted is a very defective way of running human communities. Unfortunately, it usually involves people voting to take other people's money for their own purposes. It would be better if people voted with their own money - you get votes according to how much money you give the government [which is how the USA electoral system works where they have the best politicians money can buy, as the old joke goes]. Or something like that. Or not. I'm not going to try to design a better democratic system just now.
<we have to be just as passionate about not wanting to see Chinese being hurt as we do New Zealanders. >
Does that include Taiwanese, or do you just mean the likes of Yiwu the Mad who chant Mao's mantra and genuflect to Jintao? Is it okay for Hu Jintao's military manoeuvres to deep cleanse Taiwanese families?
<You are far more clever than I am in every facet of life, but I am not sure about your motivation.>
That's a highly dubious assertion and is plain wrong in relation to your own life [and you must surely know that]. Megalomaniacs think that because they have super-powerful brains [or even if they don't] and gang up with others of their type, they should presume to run everyone's lives, failing to understand that the only person who can best understand their life and wishes is the person themselves.
My motivation is simple: peace, light, harmony, happiness, health, prosperity, longevity, fun and love. I want that for me and everyone. When everyone has bought one of those wonderfully anodyne CDMA phragmented photon cyberphones, we should reach said Utopia.
I also want to see what happens with the development of It - I'm sure that's going to be a LOT of fun. I'm happy to push It along, unlike Ted Kaczynski who was prepared to murder to stop it. [See Unabomber manifesto].
No more than half of us agree with who is ruling us and we disagree with even those we have voted for much of the time. Jay's racist objection to Japan's rule instead of Beijing's rule is the old tribal gangsterism. It's ugly.
Heck, our only begotten son, little friend of all the world, has chosen to go and live in Tokyo and be ruled by the Japanese. He doesn't even get a vote. It can't be all that bad. We both went to Beijing and being ruled by that place would NOT be so good. Note that Yiwu the Mad does NOT live there, so it can't be all that great.
<the "Chinese extended family" be allowed to settle the Taiwan/China issue on their own? >
So, does that include me? If not, why not? You'll need to define "Chinese extended family". Good luck!! You racists always try to put rings around DNA. I don't see how <The motivation is race, color, national origin, and DNA blind.>
Roll on Year of the Feather Duster!
