Colin Powell knew better than to say that Iraq was fine under Saddam's repression - though he, like the rest of the US, was taken by surprise by how broken Iraq actually was before the US ever got there.

It's you who jumped to the conclusion that Iraq was just fine under Saddam. Colin Powell knew better.

This is the "terrorists are cockroaches" theory. Step on one, it goes, a hundred more pop up. People who believe this theory have been telling Israel not to fight the terrorists since it was counterproductive. Israel didn't listen, and guess what? they have won the intifada. People who espouse the cockroach theory don't ever seem to ask themselves what else the AQ terrorists might be doing with their time if the US wasn't in Iraq. I would far rather have the Marines acting as flypaper in Baghdad than have another 9/11 here.

Those eager terrorists are learning that all that stuff they were told about Americans being too yellow to fight isn't exactly true. The Iraqis hate them too - a recent poll around Baghdad (in the middle of the Sunni triangle, mind) asked "do you support military action against the terrorists?" 90% said yes - and this is Sunnis talking. It would have been 100% in Irbil or Basra. Terrorist need to 'swim among the people like fish in the sea' and they haven't got a sea in Iraq, just a bunch of little ponds.
