It is a fact Nadine. The number of Americans killed by al Qaeda is extraordinarily small if you are trying to make the case that Americans in general are at high risk. A handful of people with boxcutters hijacked planes to maximum destructive effect -- it was truly tragic. But in terms of my life, the risks are very small indeed. I do not live my life in fear. I travel, live well and have a wonderful life -- I am indeed very fortunate. There are people in America at risk of being killed by al Qaeda -- they are stationed in Iraq and have been wounded and killed in the thousands. Their risks are extremely high. They die every day. It is worth it every day to ask why they are there.

We can, if we chose, forego any attempt to find security except by means of identifying and killing "enemies". But we will not kill our way to peace and security. We will not lie our way to the truth. And we will not succeed in using public relations spin campaigns to convince people that the United States is on a noble mission in Iraq. We launched a misguided and illegal war in Iraq and we are paying for it -- some people with their lives. We launched a war that lowered our standards of human decency by attempting to justify torture. We launched a war that sapped our military strength to deal with real threats. Now we don't know how to get out -- and that is what Powell was warning about.
