I think the best alternative the entire Western world could have employed to end terrorism, would have been to focus on alternative fuels and boycott Middle East oil.

So true! The good news is that our problems in the ME won't run much longer than what, 50 or 100 years more. When the oil runs out, we won't care about the place, or at least our caring will be solely restricted to Israel.

But, I'm just a common citizen, and unfortunately, this country doesn't tend to elect the best and brightest anymore. We just elect those who have the most money to campaign with

It is name awareness that counts. That will bring the money. Figures from sports, entertainment, and the American nobility. Paris Hilton is likely to be the first female Pres.
