The probability of my being harmed in a car accident can be calculated -- and the risk is enough to modify my behavior -- 50 thousand people die each year on American roads -- that is rounghly 150,000 in the last three years and the deaths mount day after day. In the last three years, roughly 3,000 Americans were killed by al Qaeda and all of them on one day in one incident. The odds of me being harmed by al Qaeda can be calculated and they are extremely small. On the other hand, the odds that a young man serving in Iraq will be harmed is extremely high.

If you want to maximize the number of Americans killed or harmed by al Qaeda, send them to Iraq.
