Quite right Brian h. < please do not change the subject. We merely want to get the historical facts straight> Jay is as slippery as an eel. Thanks for the history lesson, the generality of which is much as I understood it.

What is fascinating is China's desire for empire building in an era when empires have devolved to smaller units with more closely aligned interests.

It's puzzling what China fears so much that they are prepared to start a war over Taiwanese running their own show.

New Zealand used to be part of New South Wales in Australia, but became independent about a century ago [while remaining British]. Then, New Zealand became independent of Britain stage by stage, still not complete. There has been no big drama, zero threats and no murder in the process and goodwill has been maintained. Economic associations continue uninterrupted.

Australia, Canada and others have become independent of Britain too. Quebec is even considering seceding from Canada and has done for decades with no threat of war over the matter. It's a matter for those living in the affected area to decide.

I don't see why China can't just leave it to Taiwanese to do the same. I suppose it's just eons-old mindless megalomania, but maybe there's something else at work, such as a forward base for China against inroads by the USA.

Given King George II's attitude to freedom and democracy, and the lack of it in China, I'd be surprised if he let China just take over Taiwan against the will of Taiwanese.

The games have begun. One USA submarine is out of commission, but there are plenty more available for 2005 Year of the Rooster manoeuvres.
