We drove out of Palenque (there is a nice fully restored Mayan temple there) to the Usumacinta and floated down in kayaks with a support raft. We were on the river seven days. The howlers are really bad staying in a small tent ... it sounds like there is a pack of jaguars right outside.

Pierdras Negras is downstream of Yaxchilan. It has been pillaged quite a bit and isn't fully excavated. I got lost in the jungle for a while there because I went in by myself. The sun goes down real fast that far south. Also you have to worry about land mines on the Guatemalan side of the river, a guy got his leg blown off a week after my trip.
