moenmac--Lack of coverage in outlying areas is a typical response of VZ. I have the same problem here in upstate NY, in an area just 30 minutes from a city. The motivation for NOT providing wireless in areas such as this (a lake shore surrounded by large hills) is that it forces customers to use Verizon wired facilities at a time when Verizon is actually losing wired customers to wireless. As I have commented several times before, these companies with an old guard committed to preserving old technology simply can't get it through their heads that they make LESS profit by trying to maintain an outmoded technology. I would dearly love to eliminate my wired service altogether, in favor of 100% wireless for voice and data applications (which would also mean that I could use the same service almost anywhere I travel).

In the devastated portions of countries hit by the tsunami, there was hardly any communications infrastructure to begin with, or it was so inadequate that it would simply not do for most uses. That infrastructure is now totally destroyed, and it only makes sense to replace it with wireless, which would be the lowest cost alternative. I'm hoping that the governments of these nations will not give in to politically or financially motivated practices and will instead select a wireless technology that provides the best services at lowest cost.
