TX cops blow $600 mil of homeland security funds

January 9, 2005

AUSTIN, Texas An audit finds some homeland security money was improperly spent in Texas.
The report examined the use of the state's nearly 600 (m) million in anti-terrorism funds.

It found one jurisdiction used the money to buy a trailer used to haul lawn mowers to "lawn mower drag races."

The report also found that one county bought radios and other communication equipment from a company owned by a county commissioner.

The audit's findings mirror some problems identified in a September report by The Dallas Morning News. The newspaper found some cities were using their anti-terror money to buy equipment for traffic stops, drug probes and even community festivals.

Auditors in Texas are forwarding the case to a special investigation unit.
