China develops "soft-body airplane"

As learned from Henan Normal University Zhang Bingyan, a senior engineer with the university has spent 11 years starting in 1993 in developing a new "soft-body airplane". The airplane has entered the examination phase and is to be flight-tested soon.

According to Zhang Bingyan the airplane adopts a special high-strength fiber material for its surface. Apart from the engine and framework there is no hard material in the airplane. For this reason it is called "soft-body airplane". The airplane has the shape of a triangle with a length of 6 meters. Its wings are 8 meters long and its total weight is only 90-odd kilograms. It can approach a speed of 200 kilometers per hour and take off and touch down on a 20-meter long road. Its most singular characteristics are lightness, solidness, capability against collision and safety. The tensile strength of the airplane material is 10 to 15 times that of steel. The airplane would not be damaged due to collision under any circumstances, therefore human bodies can be safeguarded. It has been viewed by domestic and overseas airplane experts as the safest airplane (including aircrafts) so far. It is also low in cost - less than 100,000 yuan.

As learned Zhang Bingyan graduated from Beijing Institute of Technology in the 1960s and was later assigned to the Commission of Science and Technology and Industry for National Defense to be engaged in engine research. He developed two singular airplanes and has therefore received commendations from relevant state departments.
