I think the term "militia" describes something informal, which can be formed ad hoc in times of necessity. I believe that is codified somewhere in the US Code, as a matter of fact. IIRC, it defines "the militia" as males of a certain age group, who can be called to arms in the event of a national emergency. I'm much too lazy at the moment to look it up... Derek
