The Associated Press solemnly advises us, with not a hint of scare quotery, that Abbas Is Pragmatist Who Opposes Violence. (The headline’s funny if you imagine it said with a Russian accent.)
JERUSALEM - Mahmoud Abbas, the man who exit polls said overwhelmingly won Sunday’s Palestinian presidential election, is a demonstrated pragmatist who opposes violence but who can still be expected to drive hard bargains in any future peace talks with Israel.
Long the No. 2 man in the Palestinian hierarchy after the late Yasser Arafat, the 69-year-old Abbas is well liked both at home and abroad despite a gray, businesslike image that always stood in sharp contrast to Arafat’s theatrics.
Two respected exit polls had Abbas winning between 66 and 70 percent of the vote. Final results were expected on Monday.
Here’s how the lede of this story might have been written in an alternate universe where lizardoids hold the reins of media power: Abbas Is Holocaust Denier Who Won’t Stop Violence.
JERUSALEM - Mahmoud Abbas, whose nom de guerre is Abu Mazen, the man who exit polls said overwhelmingly won Sunday’s Palestinian presidential election, is a demonstrated Holocaust denier who opposes violence in English but incites mobs of gun-toting terrorists in Arabic, and who can realistically be expected to break any agreements he makes in any future peace talks with Israel.
Long the No. 2 henchman in the Palestinian kleptocracy after the late unlamented murderer Yasser Arafat, the 69-year-old Abbas is held in deep contempt both at home and abroad despite a gray, businesslike image designed to sell to the West, in sharp contrast to Arafat’s barely disguised reign of terror and deceit.
Two “respected” exit polls had Abbas winning between 66 and 70 percent of the vote, to no one’s surprise. Final results were expected on Monday, at which time Jimmy Carter will announce his approval.
