<Somebody needs to provide leadership> But what is "leadership"? Did Saddam provide "leadership" to Iraq? Does Bush provide "leadership" to Iraq? Do the insurgents provide "leadership" in Iraq? Leadership has proven to be too fuild a term, with each interested party insisting that they are providing leadership. OBL would no doubt see himself as a leader. What does leadership mean to you?

For my part, I would like to see the rule of law and civil rights on a global scale -- along with more clearcut rules concerning who can intervene and on what basis to protect human rights. The United States has assigned itself the roles of global legislature, global social architect, and in matters of law we are judge, jury, and police. We also decide who is fit to be head-of-state in other countries and we decide when the sovereignty of another country can be ignored. For a handful of Americans, this is the supremebeing status to which we have naturally risen. For the rest of the world, it is friendly fascism. Is the United States demonstrating leadership? Or is the US trampling on the basic rights and institutions that might contain America from abusing its power?
