Why should drugs and tobacco get special protection? All legal products should get it then as well under your scheme.

That would mean producers of any product or anyone who provides a service would have zero responsibility. You're talking about a free-for-all. What would be the purpose of that? We can hold companies responsible because they receive the benefits from the sale of their product. Benefits should go along with responsibility.

Do you think Merck would have removed Vioxx if it wasn't frightened by the lawsuits? Nope. It would still be selling it and it would be up to individual doctors and patients to worry about heart attacks and strokes.

What about those exploding tires? Do you think there would have been a wholesale replacement campaign if there wasn't concern over legal liability?

I don't think it's cut and dry but there must be a mechanism or two or three for getting bad products out of the market. One way (not good IMO) is to ban them entirely, the other is to make companies and consumers think twice about harm, liability and responsibility.

================

Clinton sent 80 missiles into the training camp when he thought OBL was there. That was considered, by Republicans, as wagging the dog. Republicans had impeachment on their minds long before they knew about Monica.

I blame Clinton for his stupidity about Monica. I blame Republicans for OBL wandering around before AND after 911. I blame Bush for going on vacation (as he did for 40% of his first term, a new modern record) and ignoring 40 warnings from his own FBI. I blame Rice for total and gross incompetence and lying about how the PDB was 'historical' and not immediate. I blame Bush for ignoring the results of the Cole investigation, for ignoring Clarke, for not taking the Clinton admin's warnings seriously in favor of musing about SDI, etc.

I blame Bush for failing to go after OBL in Afghanistan and for increasing the likelihood of terrorism (here and overseas) by messing incompetently with Iraq. Bush has had 4 years and a majority Congress to 'fix' things from the Clinton admin. He has to stop blaming everyone else for his mess ups.

Bush has to stop hiding from bad news. Heck, even Newt Gingrich (!) is on a nationwide tour whacking Bush upside the head for Iraq.
