Diana to Receive 'Unique Funeral'
Buckingham Palace today announced that Princess Diana will be given a ``unique funeral for a unique person'' Saturday in London. Her coffin will be carried through the streets to services at Westminster Abbey, to be followed by a private burial at her family's estate in central England. Until the funeral, Diana's body will lie in the Chapel Royal at St. Jame's Palace in central London, and thousands of mourners have flocked there to sign books of condolences. Crowds have also gathered outside Kensington Palace, Diana's London home, and outside Buckingham Palace, as they continue mourning the late Princess.
Clinton Not Attending Funeral
President Clinton will not attend Princess Diana's funeral, a White House spokesman said today. ``Consultations are ongoing to determine the appropriate representation for the president and the people of the United States,'' spokesman Joe Lockhart told reporters accompanying Clinton on his three week vacation on Martha's Vineyard. He did not give a reason why Clinton would not be attending Saturday's funeral for Princess Diana at Westminster Abbey.
Driver's Alcohol Level Was High
French officials say the driver who crashed Princess Diana's car -- killing her, her friend Dodi Al Fayed and himself -- was driving at a high speed with twice the blood alcohol level that would have landed him in jail. Police sources said the driver was traveling at ``very high speed.'' But they did not confirm a report that the wrecked car's speedometer was stuck at 196 kph (122 mph). The road's speed limit was 50 kph (30 mph). A judicial source says the driver's alcohol level was 1.70 grams of alcohol per liter of blood -- more than double the criminal level. Police say it would take 10 glasses of wine for an average-sized man to reach the 1.70 level.
Clinton Sends Condolences
President Clinton is sending condolences to British Prime Minister Tony Blair on the death of Princess Diana, saying ``all of us have lost a friend and a strong voice for those less fortunate.'' In a letter written at his vacation retreat in Martha's Vineyard, Clinton praised Diana's ``untiring and selfless commitment to helping persons in need, particularly children, the victims of AIDS and landmines, and other vital humanitarian concerns.'' Clinton sent letters expressing similar sentiments to Queen Elizabeth, Diana's ex-husband Prince Charles, and Diana's brother Charles Spencer.
Internet Tributes for Diana
People all over the world are plugging into the Internet to pay tribute to Princess Diana. Those unable to place a personal tribute outside her Kensington Palace home in London or at one of Britain's embassies around the world have instead posted grief-laden, and often angry, messages on World Wide Web sites set up to honor the Princess. Most have been short, simple messages of thanks to the princess and hope for her two young sons. But many have vented outrage against the paparazzi whom many condemn for hounding Diana to her death. ``It's very sad that a queen of people's hearts should die at the hounding of the paparazzi dogs,'' wrote one mourner from Malaysia.
