Having never been a team player, nor a person attracted to cheering for anything, other than a really good cause that appeals to me rationally, I can't help you out with the team spirit thing. I just think it's a manifestation of group think- which obviously has certain evolutionary advantages. You're either born a grouper or a loner- and I think all populations, animal and human, need both. Groupers give you ballast, loners drive innovation- to generalize rather broadly. Much as I tend to dislike what groupers sometimes do, I'm sure they play an important role in the social ecosystem.
