State Farm settles case on damaged car titles

About 30,000 motorists who bought salvaged vehicles might be due refunds in coming months under a settlement announced Monday between state attorneys general and State Farm Mutual Insurance Co.

New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said between 200 and 300 of this state's residents likely are among those due refunds because the vehicles' titles didn't indicate they had been severely damaged in accidents.

The cars and trucks in question had been insured by State Farm and were damaged severely enough that they were declared total losses. Their owners were compensated, but the cars were then repaired and resold to new owners.
