Associated Press

January 10, 2005

BILLINGS, Montana - An American cattlemen's group is suing the U.S. Department of Agriculture over its plan to resume imports of live Canadian cattle .

The lawsuit was filed today in federal court in Billings, Montana by the United Stockgrowers of America.

It says Canadian imports threaten both consumers and U.S. producers and asks a judge to prevent the government from allowing the imports.

The USDA has announced Canadian cattle imports will resume in March after they were blocked a year-and-a-half ago because of a single case of mad cow disease.

A second cow tested positive for the disease this month in Alberta.
