That actually was the most likely reason for the constitutional right.

You and I have had this discussion before. While I agree with the notion of having weapons to protect ourselves from the government, it's simply unfeasible.

Bear in mind that, if we're ever in a situation where we have to defend ourselves from our government, it will be a scenario where some really nasty totalitarian government is in power. Short of that, we don't need arms. And if that totalitarian government is in power, it will use whatever it has to stay there. There's no way we can fight with the kind of arms it's feasible for us to own against the kind of arms that the mighty US military has at its command. So, having arms to fight the government is irrelevant.
