David, the market is not open today, and we have hashed over all the COMS news. If you wish to move on, it would be helpful for you to provide a new topic.
I cannot say I agree with your statement that Royalty is an ignoble tradition. For one, the Royalty in nations that have keep that tradition are usually more figureheads than leaders wielding absolute power. Therefore, there is no harm in keeping the tradition, if the people wish to keep it. The Royal Family in some countries can provide a source of national pride and unity, something that is woefully lacking in the USA.
For example, Norway has a King; I believe his name is Olaf. He lives in a Palace. The country is united in their love for their King, who holds a figurehead position as the "Ruler" of the country. When King Olaf became ill a few years ago, the country was united in their sympathy and wishes for his speedy recovery. Perhaps here in America we have become so cynical and combative towards each other that there is nothing anymore which could provide unity, and a sense of being one whole healthy country. Perhaps people in the US would rather engage in the omnipresent President-bashing, rather than unite with good feelings about a national leader and his or her family. Perhaps in many ways, ours is the third rate nation.
