Re: Is it literally possible that a manmade device like a nuclear bomb could trigger a massive earthquake?

You just get off on the wrong foot: it's not a massive earthquake that was triggered by the synchronized explosions of several ANWSs (my own acronym, btw) but a massive TSUNAMI/TIDAL WAVE! Here's the clue:

Alas, even that was not enough to cover the damage caused by this extraordinary event, so NOAA progressively upgraded the reading to 8.5, then to 8.9, and finally to 9.0 - at least for the present."

Is that how we'been taught to carry out SCIENTIFIC measurings? You don't twist and tamper with the measured data to make them fit your arbitrary premises! A proper scientific protocol works the other way around: you face the data and then try to find out what kind of phenomenon they can result from. The data are clear: a magnitude 6.4 earthquake and a freak tsunami. Let's assume that only 30% of an underwater quake's energy is conveyed to the water mass... The next question is then: can a M6.4 quake trigger such a devastating tsunami? Answer: no. Then the question is: what else might have triggered the tsunami --and a collateral M6.4 quake? Answer: deep underwater nukes. QED.
