To Bill,

Nineteen million people tuned in to watch the body of Diana, Princess of Wales arrive in Britain last night, it was announced today.

The provisional total for BBC1, ITV and Channel 5 was double the number normally watching television at that time on a Sunday evening.

The early figures show that viewers continually switched from channel to channel from 6am yesterday until 7pm to catch the latest news.

BBC1, ITV and Channel 5 carried live coverage of the Princess's body being carried away from the Royal plane at RAF Northolt.

Audiences built steadily from a 6am low of 0.5 million for BBC1, BBC2 and ITV to 10.8 million at 5pm and 12.8 million at 6pm.

Channel 4 carried the Northolt pictures in an extended news broadcast at 7.30pm and BBC2 screened Country File at 7pm.

"The figures show the monumental nature of the event and what it meant to the British people," said an ITV spokeswoman.

"This peak figure at 7pm is about double what we would normally expect at this time of year on a Sunday. They reflect the enormous affection the British public had for the Princess."

HARLEY.
