I suspect that AMD got some good info regarding Intels numbers a couple of days ago. They then had a choice: 1)warn ahead and have the stock tank, or 2) wait for Intel to announce a good quarter, see AMDs stock rise with Intels on expectations that AMD did equally well (or better given AMDs guidance)then warn and have it tank from an even higher initial price. Some upgrades as well as a rush of stock purchases may have occurred prior to the tanking in the second case.

I think they choose the better approach, warn before a false runup on Intels results.

This does not excuse their failure to warn a few weeks or even a month ago.
