"Bushism" does not mean saying two completely antithetical things in the same breath. He went out of his way to say, not only "I don't think that religion is necessary for patriotism," but also "I've never said that, and I've never thought that." Tolerance for religious differences is default mode for Americans. It takes a very strange American to express intolerance for religious differences, and it always causes scandal when the intolerance is expressed by a person of high reknown. I think you're twisting his words in order to find intolerance which is not there.
