Maybe it's like not feeling the need to publicly proclaim that you don't beat your wife. Just bringing up the subject causes people to wonder whether you do, in fact, beat your wife. You might take note that his bringing up the fact that he's tolerant about lack of religion causes you to wonder whether he really means he is, in fact, not tolerant of lack of religion.
