EU arms ban on China may be lifted soon: Britain

London, January 13, 2005|01:39 IST
A 15-year-long European Union embargo on selling armaments to China is likely to be lifted in the next six months, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said on Wednesday.

He said he expected the ban, imposed in the wake of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, to be lifted during Luxembourg's current tenure at the rotating presidency of the EU, which runs until the end of June.

"I think you would get relatively short odds on a decision happening under the Luxembourg presidency," Straw told a committee of British lawmakers which scrutinises arms exports.

"It is more likely than not that this will be decided under this presidency."

In December, European Union leaders declared their "political will" to lift the arms embargo on China, while also stressing that Beijing must respect human rights and regional stability.

They called on the Luxembourg government to proceed towards an agreement, saying they "invited the next presidency to finalise the well-advanced work in order to allow for a decision".

"Our position in principle is that, subject to satisfaction of the issues laid out by the European Council in December, we will support a lifting of the arms embargo," Straw said.
