Otherwise, why would they have gone to any church? They're politicians, silly. They kiss babies and they go to church. Lots of people go to church to be seen going to church. If you want votes or car sales or simply community approbation, you go to church. Everyone in church is not there to commune with the Lord. Perhaps you've missed the surveys that show that the majority of Americans wouldn't vote for an atheist.
