JDN, I don't want to see any species lost to the world forever. There is now reasonable hunting of alligators, which is regulated properly, will keep the population healthy.
I have a "save the panther" license plate on my Jeep. The only reason that the population is growing, is because the state got a bunch of Texas cougars, which are closely related the the Florida panther, to keep the gene pool from getting too tight.
The problem, as I see it, is that too much land is being taken out of the wild to build housing subdivisions, high rises, and malls. There is some project in the wind, that will severely harm the Everglades, but I think they are going to stop that. I don't like humans that consider indigenous animals should lose their habitat, just so people can live in their comfort, while the animals die off. There are already too many people in Florida, and many other places in America, and they are destroying the ecological balance without giving a tinker's damn. That angers me. I feel the same way, when a developer takes a wood plot, bulldozes all the mature trees, builds his people caves, and then plants a bunch of baby trees just to be able to use up every inch of land that he can. |
