I think that it was correct to suspect, and correct to make efforts to ensure that Saddam was unable to obtain WMD. I think that it was correct apply pressure on Saddam. I think that political pressure from the Presidents of the United States and their staffs was the correct thing to do.

I don't think that anyone had hard evidence of WMD, after the GW1. In fact many of the experts including weapons inspectors and generals responsible for security in the area said that Saddam did not have WMD anymore.

And I think that it was correct to build up a military presence. And it was correct to demand the return of weapons inspection teams.

And it would have been correct to demand human rights in Iraq. And it would have been correct to demand a representative government in Iraq.

But it was wrong to take out the weapons inspectors, attack Iraq with the narrow coalition that joined up and without the support of the UN. And it was wrong to bomb the country and kill upwards of 100,000 people, and it was wrong to send our best and brightest soldiers into battle while there were alternatives still on the table.

Ultimately it may have been needed to invade Saddam militarily, but not until every alternative was exhausted, and not without the support of the UN. We now find ourselves with little or no world support in a growing guerilla conflict. The post invasion plan is inadequate. We did not enlist the broad support of Iraqis in bringing "freedom" to them. We now face a growing insurgency that wants the US out. And the in-fighting between the Sunni, Shia and Kurds boils beneath the surface. Right now they are united in wanting the US out...and when we do go...civil war will inevitably break out.

What kind of foreign policy is this? One word...Insane.
