Considerably shorter, in many ways :-)

I do not think we stress enough to children in school the rarity of fossils, and how unusual it is for fossils to form. Because teachers do not teach this, adults grow up expecting things from the fossil record that make no logical sense. Many areas of science are taught this way, imo. Children are not ready to read college papers on the subject, but we could make the whole thing a little more intelligent- of course that would mean teachers would probably need refresher courses.

I'll never forget the second grade teacher down the hall from me teaching her kids that sea anemones and sponges were PLANTS. I dealt with 2nd graders, they were more than able to understand the kingdoms and phylums- and could even remember simple representatives of each phylum. In many ways we sell the kids short, and by teaching them superficially we leave them vulnerable to the strange ideas of charlatans.
