I think in the past they have deliberately tried to stay out of arenas where their customers do business, but if their customers aren't doing the job of getting the products to the ultimate end users, maybe it's time Sun stepped in directly.

Some time ago I said that I thought they needed to flatten discount schedules and lower list prices, to encourage sales to entry level customers. I think those steep discount schedules are in place to protect channel partners, but again -- if the channel partners aren't getting the job done, perhaps it's time Sun stepped in directly.

I've also suggested to them directly that they push their products into places like Best Buy, Fry's, and WalMart, and for a while that seemed to be happening (at least in software), but it seems to have failed (probably because they didn't have the retail marketing expertise needed to make it work).

All JMHO.
