I don't buy that. Most companies, under pressure from a competitor, try to get mean and lean. Building extra capacity is the opposite. You could say Intel is building those 300mm fabs to get mean and lean, but then Intel would have to also close down extra capacity. There is another reason for Intel's extra capacity, and that is the failure of Itanium, which is a huge chip, and would have required a huge manufacturing base. Intel probably is still hanging on to the older fabs, because they still feel Itanium will be a success in the future, and they want to keep the extra manufacturing base, just in case.
