<It is my thesis that we are falling behind in the battle of ideas, where the battle for the allegiance of the mostly moderate Muslims will be fought. If we don't win this battle, future generations are doomed. We owe it to them to win it.>

That is why policy is so vitally important. By putting military considerations at the forefront, we have seriously harmed our global leadership position. When we invade unilaterally, and when we brush aside vital legitimizing institutions like the UN and the Geneva Conventions to free ourselves of contraints to act "lawfully" and respect human rights, engaging in torture of Iraqis randomly pulled from their houses at night, we destroy our legitimacy and leadership position in the larger war for hearts and minds.
