I don't want to speculate on what it comes down to because I don't care.

I think belief in a creator, should be compatible with science. After all, belief is more flexible than observations. So you could simply believe that everything science finds, God somehow started, No conflict there. It's not provable, but that's the whole point of faith, I would have thought.

What seems strange to me is trying to jury-rig science to fit with belief, rather than tweaking belief to fit with what we can actually observe, or repeatably demonstrate, or squashing scientific theories that fit what is observed, because they somehow threaten a belief.
