I have to agree with Ionesco. These "science zealots" are indeed rare and they seem to be held up as straw men by Creation Science activists. I'd say, on balance, the side to go back to pre-Scopes is more militant, vocal and numerous than are their alter egos, but that is the way it always is.

I never came across these alleged science zealots, even in college. Now, if you asked some professor, they might 'fess up and say that they were indeed atheists, or agnostic. I'd argue that good science dictates agnosticism (not knowing), but most people can't make the leap of disbelief long enough to hold that position.
