Putin says he warned US that Hussein plotted attack
US officials voice surprise at words of Russian leader

WASHINGTON -- President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said yesterday that his government had warned Washington that Saddam Hussein was preparing attacks on US soil and on American interests abroad before the US invasion of Iraq. But US officials expressed surprise at Putin's remarks.

Putin's assertion appears to bolster President Bush's contention that Iraq posed a major threat, and comes at a time when Bush is facing growing accusations that he overstated the case for war.

"After the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and before the start of the military operation in Iraq, Russian special services several times received information that the official services of the Saddam regime were preparing terrorist acts on the United States and beyond its borders," Putin told reporters in Kazakhstan.

But, as you insist, Saddam was no threat to anyone. OK, whatever.
