[Re: DT has no interest to actually deploying it]

Since xDSL poses a risk to ISDN revenues, DT has no interest to actually deploying it (besides testing which they naturally need to do).

Arndt,

I see a flaw in this logic. Isn't Deutsche Telekom leading the way for Internet telephony? Would this not pose a risk to DT's Long Distance rates?

DT has been working with DSL since early 96.

VocalTec Soars On Deutsche Telekom Deal
(08/28/97; 11:00 a.m. EDT)

Shares of VocalTec Communications soared 27 percent Thursday on news
that Deutsche Telekom AG would acquire a 21 percent stake in the
Internet telephony company.

VocalTec [VOCLF] closed up 4 1/4 to 19 7/8. Deutsche Telekom [DT]
was down 5/8 to 20 5/8.

Under the agreement, Deutsche Telekom will buy 2.3 million shares of
VocalTec. Deutsche Telekom, based in Germany, will also buy $30 million of VocalTec products, services, and support for a planned worldwide rollout of Internet telephony during the next two-and-a-half years.

VocalTec, based in Israel, enables audio, video, data, text, and other
communications over the Internet.

Deutsche Telekom, Europe's largest telecommunications company and the third-largest telecom company in the world, is the first major carrier to develop Internet telephony, the companies said.

"We see enormous growth potential worldwide in Internet telephony and
multimedia business applications via the Internet," said Ron Sommer,
chairman of Deutsche Telekom, in a statement.
