But the point is not really to get a return, except to match inflation.

If it were up to me, everybody would get the same amount from SS; it wouldn't be a graduated scale where people who made more get more later.

Once again, it's a safety net, not an investment plan.

Because you and they are shortsighted. Young people tend to think that they're invincible, and that their future is entirely in their own hands. That just isn't the case. Safety nets are an insurance policy against the circumstances that are outside our control.
