I guarantee you, I could fashion a rock solid safety net out of the same contributions that everyone makes to social security. Except the safety net, I would create for people would produce a stream of income during retirement that isn't just barely poverty level, but that would be much higher than that.

I'm not talking about getting rid of the safety net. I'm talking about changing a system that was created using the financial principles of 1935. Folks, in case you haven't noticed, it is 2005. 70 years later, we have learned one hell of a lot about finance and how to structure portfolios that maximize returns based on asset mix, reallocation, time horizon, and a whole host of other factors. To ignore 70 years of learning and refuse to upgrade our social security system is criminal.

It would be just as bad as if you forced the IRS to continue using an abacus to calculate what people owe them instead of allowing them to use modern computer equipment. I'm just flabbergasted that you and others think social security is fine just the way it is.
