Do the math. As long as you have a population whose trend increases over time, which has been one consistent thing about our population, you will always have a system that is unsustainable. The only way to make it sustainable is to tag contributions to the individual and limit benefits to payouts from that individuals account.

Now if we had a shrinking population, then the system would run a surplus. This is basic math and it is also the reason why social security has had to raise taxes and reduce benefits already and will continue to have to make these tweaks in the future.
