Generally it is rooted in conflicting interests and/or conflicting ideologies

I'd change that to be "conflicting interests and/or the overlap of conflicting ideologies". I'd like to put "overlap" into the first part as well, but some may see that as redundant. Ideologies can be diametrical opposites without the respective parties having any reason to annoy each other.

What has A done to B? is generally the wrong question to ask

It always starts somewhere.

In the case of AQ, they have a serious existential headache with the success of the West, which is opposed to their faith as they interpret it.

We disagree greatly here. I am very much in agreement with Pat B. on this subject. They do have some legit reasons, and we always revert to something like you say above, which IMO is delusional.
