Unlike some supporters of drug legalization I do think there would be more use if drugs were legal. However I'm not so sure there would be more of the negative consequences of use, in fact I think there might be less. The illegality of drugs makes it more likely that people will turn to crime to support their habit. It certainly makes it more likely that the sellers of drugs will turn to violence. We might get more visable signs of the negative of drug use (as people don't hide it as much) without the situation actually being worse (even if it appears worse).

Gin is legal today and we don't have "18th century London".
