My own feeling is the economically strongest countries are the ones where the wealth is divided the most equally among it's citizens. It's analogous to the network computer model versus the mainframe and terminal model. When the mainframe goes down, so do all the terminals. When a networked desktop goes down, none of the others are affected, and network traffic is rerouted and continues as before.
We've been economically predominant because of our strong middle class, which government policies seem intent on dismantling.
