There have been many postings regarding the religiosity of academics. There is an inverse correlation between peer ranking and religiosity. The reason, IMO, is that there is a rigor in science that shakes off dogma. While non-scientists might think that the "scientific principles" held by scientists are JUST LIKE the dogma held by religious institutions, they are indeed very, very different. This doesn't mean a scientist can't be spiritual, but they would be much less like to be convinced of the absolute truth of their spirituality and much less likely to have specific dogma associated with it. This has been my experience anyway and it is born out by studies of scientifically oriented people.
