MRIs and CAT scanners, sonny, have rather DEEPLY impacted the rate of what used to be called "exploratory surgery". Remember when they had to cut you open to find out if that intestinal pain was due to a possibly cancerous lump? Well now they can often verify the presence of that lump on a scan- -and they know where it is and the best route to get at it.

Imagers can also eliminate surgery. Sometimes a problem is found that is not surgically correctable. Certain types of arterial abnormalities that cause trigeminal neuralgia are surgically correctable fairly easily. And others are but at very risk. An image can indicate which you have. And sometimes it is known that the imager should indicate some particular lesion before surgery is justified.

However, feel free to have your national health service cut you up.
